The City of Signal Hill's business-friendly attitude stems from a cooperative relationship between the Chamber of Commerce, City Council members, City Hall staff, business leaders and law enforcement professionals. The City Council and the City's Economic Development Department have implemented programs designed to attract new businesses, and to help existing businesses expand within the community.  The Chamber, City, and local newspaper work together to provide opportunities to market members’ businesses through grand openings/ribbon cuttings, mixers, and welcoming packets for new residents.

Convenient to major freeways, the Long Beach Airport, and Port of Long Beach, Signal Hill is centrally located to provide businesses an excellent transportation network and easy access to key distribution points in both Los Angeles and Orange Counties.  Exceptional freeway access is provided by four (4) freeways…the San Diego Freeway (405), the Long Beach Freeway (710), the San Gabriel Freeway (605) and Garden Grove Freeway (SR 22). Additionally, Pacific Coast Highway (SR 1) forms the City's southerly boundary.   Light-Rail/Metrolink commuter stations are located just outside the City borders in the City of Long Beach, providing direct access to downtown Los Angeles and beyond.  MTA and Long Beach Transit provide bus service throughout the City. The Alameda Corridor is just north of Signal Hill provides expedited access from the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles to metropolitan Los Angeles. The Port of Long Beach is less than a 15-minute drive from Signal Hill.

Signal Hill's workforce is diverse, skilled, and well educated. The city’s proximity to California  State University-Long Beach, Long Beach City College, Brooks College and Devry Institute of Technology contributes to this excellent work force.  Signal Hill offers several parks and hiking trails to afford you and your employees with outstanding opportunities to unwind and stay physically fit.  Child care programs are also offered by the city.

  • Low Business License Fee - Business license fees in Signal Hill are among the lowest in the state.  For most businesses, an annual license costs only $40 plus $2 per employee over 2 and a $30 processing fee.  For further information, call (562) 989-7316.
  • No Gross Receipts Tax -  Some nearby communities charge businesses an additional tax based on the businesses' gross receipts.  Signal Hill does not charge a gross receipts tax.
  • No Utility User Tax - Many nearby communities charge a tax on utilities (gas, electric, water, telephone, etc.), some as high as 10%.  Signal hill does not charge any utility user taxes, thereby saving businesses thousands of dollars annually.
  • Low Tax Rate - Signal Hill is considered a "No/Low" Property Tax city, meaning property taxes are very low… only 1% of the purchase price.  Signal Hill has no municipal tax and no special assessment districts.
  • In July of 2002, the City finally received its own ZIP code which may result in lower insurance rates.
